Fandom: Supernatural
Name: Dean Winchester
Canon Point:Season 7, following episode 13, “The Slice Girls”. Canon update to S8E11 "LARP and the Real Girl" (3/1/13)
History: http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Dean_Winchester
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Winchester
Distinguishing marks:
Canon: A pentacle wreathed in fire tattooed over his heart to protect against demon possession.
Game history: As of the Tartarus event beginning 3/16/13, Dean has three, additional, permanent scars on his body.
The letter 'F' for failure.
Location: Over his heart. This will break the protective sigil already there.
Reasoning: Dean has failed on so many levels that he's lost count. He's never managed to save the people he loves, he has ruined countless lives, and there was that whole starting the apocalypse thing.
The letter 'S' for sadist.
Location: Palm of his right hand.
Reasoning: For all the souls he enjoyed tearing apart in Hell.
The letter 'D' for dishonest.
Location: Right between his shoulder blades.
Reasoning: There isn't a person he knows who he hasn't lied to, including himself. Primarily Sam. Also, for what he did to Ben and Lisa at the end of season 6.
Personality:
PROTECTOR:
Dean is first and foremost a protector and his primary concern is, and always has been, his little brother Sam. Sam is his primary concern in any and every situation; concern for his own safety is always a somewhat distant second. Children are also a soft spot for him and he has been shown to take things very much more personally when kids are involved.
CYNIC:
He is a cynic, believing only in what he can see, touch, hear, and smell. Faith is not something he's good at and he's really not inclined to try. Nor does he tend to believe in others all that much. People are just as dangerous as monsters, he knows, but they also refuse to follow set patterns like monsters do. That makes them almost more dangerous, in his book. He avoids forming relationships and attachments with others, partially for this reason. Also because the people he gets attached to end up dead quite frequently.
NEEDS TO BE NEEDED:
Deep down, he wants desperately to be valuable. Not just useful... any tool can be useful. He wants to be important and saving people gives him a bit of that satisfaction. There aren't a lot of hunters in the world and he knows that what he does is something special. Not everyone would do it and not everyone could.
ABANDONMENT:
Dean also struggles with one hell of an abandonment complex. Without exception, there has never been anyone in his life he loved who wasn't lost to him in some way at least once. His mother died when he was small, his father checked out emotionally almost at that same moment, his brother left the family for college, his father left him entirely two years after that, and both his father and Sam have died. His honorary uncle Bobby is now dead. The losses keep piling up without much gain to balance it.
There is nothing he won't do to hold onto his brother, now that he has Sam back. When Sam is gone -- through distance or even death -- Dean is sometimes almost incapacitated. Other times, he seems to lose sight of his own humanity, which is easier for him to do now that he's spent some time in Hell. He and Sam have been so tightly involved in each other's lives for so long that Dean doesn't really know how to be himself without Sam. Not a 'good' version of himself, anyway.
ROMANCE:
He is an irrepressible flirt. He loves it and will charm anyone he can get close to. One night stands are the extent of his 'relationship' aspirations. It isn't that he doesn't appreciate or respect the people he is with... he simply doesn't trust in his own ability to maintain a relationship, doing what he does.
Skills | Powers: Dean is well trained in US military combat styles. He is proficient with many different firearms including sidearms, shotguns, and sniper rifles. He is an expert in the use of, and combat with, knives and daggers. He is also a deadly shot with a crossbow.
He has a vast knowledge of supernatural creatures, their habits, and how to kill them. He is an expert mechanic, a skilled conman, and liar. He can recite at least one Latin exorcism from memory and can draw a Devil’s trap from memory.
First Person Sample:
[Contrary to popular belief (especially Sam's) Dean can work electronics. Internet porn doesn't just search for itself, you know. So, when he's handed this tablet, he manages to work out how to use it -- the basics, at least -- and sends out a simple message.]
Sam? Are you here?
[He's not sure which answer he's hoping for. On the one hand, if Sam answers then he's here and Dean can get to him. On the other hand, if Sam answers then he's here... and that's bad.]
Third Person Sample:
Decide to be fine until the end of the week. Make yourself smile because you're alive and that's your job. And do it again the next week. Do it right... with a smile. Or don't do it.
Frank's advice. Maybe it didn't make him the picture of perfect mental health to be taking life coaching from a man who truly believed that the United States Government was replacing people with evil clones, but when he was dangling by an increasingly thin thread, Dean took what advice he could use. Sure, his smile was about three shades away from manic most of the time, but it got him by. With practice, the joking almost came natural.
Well, until Emma. Nothing about that situation was funny. After all his lecturing to Sam about no hesitation, he'd hesitated. In fairness, though, it felt different. Amy was Sam's friend and first love maybe, but Emma was blood. Crazy, messed up, fucking insane blood, but blood none the less.
Something in him had just... wanted to make it work. With his life the way it was and after Ben, when was he going to ever have a shot at family of his own? Emma could have made it. She was born part of the insanity and uniquely capable of surviving it. If only they'd had a chance.
Dean took a breath and shook himself to dispel the melancholy. Long drives used to be solace for him, but now they just gave him too much room and too much space. Too much thinking. It was time to clear his head a little, or muddle it further with whiskey, whichever worked best. Besides, his hands were getting numb on the steering wheel and the gas tank was in serious need of refueling. He reached over and shook his brother in the passenger's seat.
"Rise and shine, Sasquatch. It's your turn to drive."
